Technical product designer

Technical product designers implement the specifications of the engineers or product designers. They design individual product parts and complete assemblies with the help of special CAD software. They check whether the designs are technically feasible and suitable for later use, whether the specified material thicknesses are sufficient or whether machine parts are stable enough. To do this, they carry out computer-simulated load tests. If the design does not withstand the load, they change it accordingly. Technical product designers therefore have to deal with many physical variables. They measure angles and volumes, determine centres of gravity, check forces and masses, specify lengths and surfaces and determine friction. They know the advantages and disadvantages of the various materials and auxiliary materials that will be used in later production. They need this knowledge in order to adapt the designs to them. From the finished construction they create precise technical documentation which serves as building instructions. These must be so precise that all technical details are described in them.

The training lasts 3.5 years.
